Innocent seafarers on commercial cargo ships are being held to ransom for millions of dollars by armed gangs of Somali pirates. The cost of Somalian piracy is both human and economic.

The film has been seen by conference audiences around the world and has amassed thousands of hits on YouTube and other online platforms.

Here in the North East we have the highest rate of under 18s in specialist alcohol treatment in England – twice the national rate.

That's why Balance launched the campaign calling for more to be done to protect children and young people from exposure to alcohol, particularly through marketing and advertising, which encourages them to drink earlier and to consume more.

Smoke-Free North East

Fresh was the UK's first dedicated regional programme set up in the North East of England to tackle the worst rates of smoking related illness and death in the country.

Smoking is still our biggest killer - claiming the lives of 11 people every day in the North East - more than alcohol, accidents, suicide, illegal drugs and diabetes combined. And around 13,000 children need medical attention from breathing in other people's smoke each year.
